What can I do with my school or neighborhood?

Parents/Guardians

  • Encourage your kids to develop and sustain active, healthy lifestyles.
  • Understand and support a SR2S program in your school.
  • Contact your school principal. Share your traffic safety concerns and interest in developing a SR2S plan.
  • Ask your school principal to help form a School Safety or SR2S Committee.
  • Make SR2S the subject of a PTA or School Site Council meeting.
  • Invite community representatives who might partner with you.
  • Participate in a "walking school bus."

Kids

  • Get excited about being active and making your neighborhood a great place to move around.
  • Question your travel choices . . . could I walk, bike, or go by transit?
  • Get out of cars and onto your feet and bikes!
  • Tell your principal and teachers that you’d like your school to develop a SR2S plan.
  • Participate in a Walk to School Day or Bike to School Challenge event.
  • Learn and practice safe pedestrian, bicycle, and transit behaviors.

Teachers and principals

  • By getting involved, you can enable and encourage young people to question their travel choices and to develop healthy and sustainable lifestyles.
  • Your school can be a community partner in the effort to make our neighborhoods more livable and our youth safer and healthier.

  • Understand and support a SR2S program in your neighborhood school.
  • Contact your neighborhood school principal. Share your traffic safety concerns and interest in developing a SR2S plan.
  • Ask your neighborhood school principal to help form a School Safety or SR2S Committee.
  • Make SR2S the subject of a Neighborhood Association meeting.
  • Bring the school community’s attention to issues surrounding the journey to school.
  • Influence changes to school policy around travel, physical activity, and food.
  • Support education initiatives within the school.
